Bordeaux offers a unique and stunning city center call and its cruise activity has developed a lot recently both for maritime cruises and river cruises. Passengers enjoy staying overnight in the heart of the 18th century UNESCO classified area and make the most of their call. Having great wines, original excursions, endless shopping, amazing food or leisure activities is not enough, Bordeaux also wants to be an environment friendly smart city.
This is why the City of Bordeaux, together with Suez (their supplier) have just launched an innovative way to collect garbage from the ships: they use a barge, and collect the garbage directly from the river side of the ship. The garbage containers are then shipped a few hundred meters further upstream, where the waste processing plant is. No more garbage trucks on the quays in the city center, less noise for passengers and the local population, less pollution, easier and safer handling for the crew, no matter if it is low tide or high tide, and more security for pedestrians on the quays. The system, which has been implemented a few months ago works for both river and maritime cruises, is a real success.
