Royan soon to be accessible to river cruises

Royan soon to be accessible to river cruises

The Minister for Transport gave the go ahead last December: cruise ships will soon be able to leave the Gironde Estuary and dock at Royan.

This new connection widens the regional scope for water cruises and builds on what the region offers to their French and international clientele.

The Port of Royan is set to launch a construction project to create purpose-built pontoons by 2020.

The Minister for Transport has also authorised boats under 1.35 metres to sail between the ‘Pont de pierre’ bridge and La Cité du Vin (Bordeaux) without the supervision of a pilot from the Port of Bordeaux.

Since the start of April 2018, there have been 44 calls at the cruise-liner terminals of Atlantic Port of Bordeaux.

Having grown over many years, Bordeaux has become an unmissable port of call, with 58 calls in total confirmed for 2019. This is a record, while the number of calls has more than doubled in under ten years.

An easier access for larger ships into Bordeaux city center

The port and the city of Bordeaux have taken advantage of planned works on the power line during this summer, to finance additional operations to heighten the power line and bring it into alignment with the Pont d’Aquitaine bridge. Larger ships will be allowed into Bordeaux city center from season 2019 and onwards.

Ships up to 262 meters long, with a beam of 32 meters, a 50 meters air draft and 7.5 meters draft will be able to sail into the city center with no restrictions.
Ships up to 8 meters draft and 53 meters air draft (and above 262 meters long) will also be allowed to access Bordeaux city center after getting the pilots and harbor master’s approval, according to the tidal conditions expected at the date of the planned call.

Larger ships can still call in Le Verdon terminal, where no size or draft restrictions apply.
